MAY 2008 HOT PICK CD/NEW RELEASES
Fleet-Fluted-Fancy-Flutework

Franz DOPPLER: Concerto for 2 Flutes in d minor, Fantasie pastorale hongroise Op. 26, Andante and Rondo Op. 25, Duettino Americain Op. 37; Karl & Franz DOPPLER: Rigoletto Fantasie Op. 38, Valse di Bravoura, Op. 33

by Sinfonia Finlandia/Patrick Gallois, Kazunori Seo, flutes

Both accomplished flutists, Karl & Franz Doppler must have had a lot of fun touring together if these chamber works for two flutes are any indication. Gallois and Seo are just as engaging as these orchestrations are clever, with plenty of charm from Sinfonia Finlandia. These salon pieces could easily turn saccharine or precious, but the musicians' technical skill and unassuming elegance capture the charm in each work, whether sparkling or warm-hearted. The Dopplers also offer more emotional depth and a range of color possibilities in the 'Bravura Waltz' and the concerto, which Gallois and Seo execute with nuanced expressiveness. But they also acquit themselves quite nicely in the many moments of virtuosic fireworks.
