19th century wealthy young men of the infamous Parisian Jockey Club demanded opera composers insert ballets that featured the club members' favorite dancers (and probably lovers) from the corps de ballet when performed at the Paris opera. Many were simply plopped into the 2nd or 3rd act (because club members were still at dinner when the opera actually started) and usually ground the dramatic action to a halt. The exception: ballets composed by Verdi of course! It's obvious from this first-ever complete, 2-CD set that Verdi took this artistic challenge seriously, connecting these choreographic interludes to the action of the story in some way. José Serebrier and the Bournemouth Symphony are passionate advocates, with each dance finely nuanced, fiery, and full of character. The rarities from Macbeth, Don Carlos, Trovatore and even Jerusalem are given just as much attention as the well-known known numbers from Otello, Aida, and the enchanting Four Seasons ballet from his Sicilian Vespers opera.
