There’s Good Buzz on this New Vaughan Williams CD! VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Piano Concerto, The Wasps Suite, English Folk Song Suite, The Running Set Here's hoping this new recording of the Piano Concerto will restore its reputation. At its premiere the piece was criticized for being too demanding and unrewarding with thick, muscular textures (Busoni and Bach were definite influences) and a rather gnarly, percussive piano part. It's an ambitious, modernist work to be sure, but Judd leads the RLPO and Wass in a bracing performance, full of thunder and lightning in the outer movements while revealing the tender vulnerability of the middle movement Romanza. Wass is Moses-like as he parts the symphonic seas and carves out the piano's prophetic role. The RLPO delights in the buzzing good humor of The Wasps, written for a student production of Aristophanes' satire at Oxford. Lighter-veined but no less exuberant are the English Folksong Suite (in a Gordon Jacob orchestration) and The Running Set, in which Judd and musicians really savor Vaughan Williams' setting of folk songs from the British Isles.
