Scholars will gather at The University of Nebraska Lincoln to consider how major legislation passed 150 years ago - in 1862 - affected and still affects Nebraska and the Great Plains. Even if American History wasn't your long suit in school, there are some years that stuck…1492….1776. Now it's time to add a year to that list – 1862 - a year after the start of the Civil War. That year was a turning point for the US – especially for Nebraska and the Great Plains. One of the main reasons: The Homestead Act. Jerry Johnston has more.

This spring, the Homestead Monument of America is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act. Programs include a display of the original Homestead Act document with Abraham Lincoln's signature, a Chautauqua of homesteading era historical figures, and much more. For details, CLICK HERE
