Ida Kavafian; violin; Mark O'Connor, violin; Paul Neubauer, viola; Matt Haimovitz, cello Much as America has done time and again, Mark O'Connor has continually re-invented himself: a virtual continuum from country and bluegrass fiddler to jazz and crossover artist, and finally to a full-fledged classical composer. As with any artist worth anything and with anything of worth to say, O'Connor has grown and developed, all the while managing to stay true to his distinct musical voice. These two quartets are a real breakthrough in synthesizing the two strains of "serious" and folk music running though O'Connor's works. One can certainly hear it in his previous recordings, but here, with both the 'Bluegrass' and Old-Time' quartets, I feel that the two styles with their own philosophies and techniques, are more seamlessly integrated while maintaining their unique qualities and character. From foot-stopping counterpoint to gospel licks according to Bartok, purists on either side might not get it at first, but this is intense, joyful, searching music that deserves intense listening.
