This CD completes the Naxos cycle of William Grant Still's Symphonies with another fine reading of works by the 'Dean of African-American composers,' who also had a friend and champion in Howard Hanson, long-serving head of the Eastman School of Music and Wahoo, Nebraska native. Jeter and his Arkansas-based ensemble offer committed, nuanced performances, balancing Still's classical influences from such disparate teachers as George Chadwick and Edgar Varese, and his embracing of ethnic American popular genres such as blues, spirituals, and jazz. While the symphonies are inspired by Still's Afro-American culture, Wood Notes is a real find expressed in Still's charming folk style. Given its premiere recording here, the 4-movement orchestral work is a love letter to nature.
