"Nebraska Concerts" Offers Classical Music in November
This month "Nebraska Concerts" features Smooth Romance from Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra and Ravel's "Bolero" from the Omaha Symphony; lovely chamber music from Lincoln's Third Chair Chamber Players, harpist Julie Smith, and a harpsichord/flute duo; and a Spring Choral Spectacular from the Abendmusik: Lincoln series. NET Radio's weekly series of fine music performed and recorded on Nebraska's stages airs Sundays at 2 p.m. CT. On Sunday, Nov. 1, Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra offers up selections from a program called "Smooth Romance." Edward Polochick leads the Orchestra in performances of one of Elgar's "Nimrod" variations; Ravel's "The Jester's Morning Serenade;" and Rachmaninoff's "Symphony No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 27." Also on the program is Henri Tomasi's "Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra" with soloist Jay Wise.

The program on Sunday, Nov. 8, features Lincoln's Third Chair Chamber Players in their season finale from 2008-2009 performing Christian Ellenwood's "Fantasy Piece," Thea Musgrave's "Pierrot," and Tristan Fuentes' "Pan Am." Also on the program this week are selections from a recital by harpist (and Hastings native) Julie Smith. Smith presents Handel's "Prelude and Toccata," Michael Mauldin's "Birds in Winter," Marcel Tournier's "Sonatine" and five of Tournier's "Six Noels, O. 32."

On Sunday, Nov. 15, from a concert called "Ravel's 'Bolero'" the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Thomas Wilkins, performs Emmanuel Chabrier's "The King in Spite of Himself;" Ravel's "Concerto for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra" and Liszt's "Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Major for Piano and Orchestra" with guest soloist Stewart Goodyear; and, of course, Ravel's "Bolero."

Flutist (and NET Radio announcer) Genevieve Randall and harpsichordist Ben Carlisle (also an NET Radio announcer) combine for a recital airing Sunday, Nov. 22, featuring Vivaldi's "Sonata for Recorder," Bach transcriptions of two of Vivaldi's "Concerto for Harpsichord," Telemann's "Trio Sonata," C.P.E. Bach's "Sonata for Solo Flute," Armand-Louis Couperin's "Deuxieme Suite," Vivaldi's "Sonata for Flute," and a movement from Alfred Schnittke's "Suite in Olden Style."

From last Spring's Abendmusik: Lincoln season finale comes the final concert of the month on Sunday, Nov. 29. Listeners will hear "A Spring Choral Spectacular" featuring the Abendmusik Chorus; the Doane College Choir; Jeff Keele, baritone; Karin Van Deun, soprano; Zuri, soprano; and the Abendmusik Chamber Orchestra.

"Nebraska Concerts" is broadcast on NET Radio, a service of NET. Dave Hughes is producer and Genevieve Randall is scriptwriter and host. The Omaha Symphony concert was recorded by Clete Baker of Studio B for Classical 90.7, KVNO.
