Advocates say now's the time to invest in kids
(2008-09-17)
(NDPR) - Advocates for childrens' issues say they want the federal and state governments to invest more money in programs to benefit children.

During what's dubbed as "Step Up For Kids" day, the advocates said it's a good time for North Dakota to make those investments -- because the state has a large budget surplus.

Dr. Todd Twogood is a Bismarck pediatrician. He says 76 percent of North Dakota day care centers rate either as poor or mediocre.

"I have personally visited child care centers here in Bismarck that have a diaper changing station, a food table where they eat lunch, and a sink -- all within arm's reach," said Twogood. "We've repeatedly gone to the Legislature to try to get some money for the day cares -- but it still isn't a priority."

The advocates also talked about the need for investment in child abuse prevention.

"It's my hope that the Governor will support future funding of services for children and families at the forefront, rather than increasing funding for foster care or treatment or prisons," said Barnes County Social Services director Heather Pautz.

And the North Dakota Education Association is hoping for more investment in schools.

"We have an opportunity to do some great things in North Dakota," said NDEA President Dakota Draper. "I tell teachers and educators that this is going to be an exciting time in North Dakota. We have a chance to start dreaming -- and not only to dream, but to do."

The groups say they will be asking questions of all candidates -- to gauge their support for these issues.
