Tax initiative could be headed to the ballot
(Prairie Public) - A group seeking to cut state income taxes has filed petitions with the Secretary of State to get the measure on the November ballot.

Americans for Prosperity wants to cut individual income taxes in half -- and cut corporate income taxes by 15 percent. The group needed 12,776 valid signatures. It submitted 15,667.

"We believe that with the surplus projections being what they are, it's time for permanent tax relief for all North Dakotans, regardless of status as far as property ownership," said Dustin Gawrylow, state policy director for Americans for Prosperity. "The closest thing to property tax relief the Legislature could come up with in the last session actually involved the income tax, so we feel that's a good vehicle for permanent tax relief."

The 2007 Legislature passed an income tax rebate for a portion of property taxes.

Secretary of State Al Jaeger will now verify the signatures.
