Goetz: Technology getting better
(2007-12-27)
(Prairie Public) - North Dakota University System chancellor Bill Goetz says the "Connect-ND" computer program is working better.

But Goetz says there will have to be an on-going investment in technology.

When the new computer program was rolled out, campuses complained that it didn't work -- students were having problems with on-line registration, contracts were delayed and reports could not be generated.

Goetz says there are still some bugs that have to be worked out -- but things are improving. However, he says this will be an on-going concern.

"There's never going to be an end to it, as long as we have this kind of technology that's constantly going to be updated," said Goetz. "It's not like you buy a book off a bookstore shelf, and you can quit at a certain point."

Goetz says now that the bugs are being worked out, he can see some areas where the campuses can work together through using the technology.

"I think that there are business functions that, rather than having those functions located on each campus, there could well be a central location for some of these functions," said Goetz. "Also, there are some processes in the registration system and purchasing, where we have asystem -- and can centralize them."

Goetz says this will take a change in campus culture.
