Are We There Yet? Black Sheep
(Prairie Public) - The inaugural musical production of one of Fargo-Moorhead's newer theatrical companies, Black Sheep Productions, hits many delightful notes with its dinner theatre production of Are We There Yet? A Parent's Survival Guide. Black Sheep Productions was created in 2009 by a small group of area performers, and began with a single production in its first year, then expanded to four shows for this year's season. This group specializes in corporate entertainment that is typically interactive comedies, and often original works by the actors.
Are We There Yet? A Parent's Survival Guide is Black Sheep's first foray into musical production, and features a cast of talented singers that includes Lisa Kornkven, Jon Hansen, Stacey Dohn and Chris Carlson. Lovely harmonies and some very nice solos tell this circle of life story of the journey through parenting from pregnancy to old age. Beautiful moments are played with honesty from Jon Hansen, once as the father of the bride, and later as the son of a mother with Alzheimer's. Lisa Kornkven delights with her take on the blues, complete with backup, in Cause I'm a Mommy', and Stacey Dohn captures the sweetly profound time as new mother in No Turning Back'. Chris Carlson pulls us through the agony of your child's ballet recital with wit and humor in Waiting For Jennie'.
Told through vignettes and songs, this musical review style show is engaging, funny, and surprisingly touching. This production uses the standard black boxes to rearrange as set pieces, and black costumes with added pieces for different scenes. The minimal set, lights and costumes would work if there were more staging to the numbers; many of the songs simply cry out for more movement or choreography.
Black Sheep Productions' Are We There Yet? A Parent's Survival Guide runs as a dinner theatre or show only at the Howard Johnson Inn, downtown Fargo, through Saturday, February 12th.
