Wilmington Works to Get ADA Compliant
(2009-11-18)
Wilmington's riverwalk is on the list of places needing work to become ADA compliant.
(whqr) - The City of Wilmington says work has already begun on city buildings and parks as part of its settlement with the Justice Department.

The city's agreement with the Justice Department outlines where municipal properties failed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A survey conducted two years ago found a lack of compliance at such locations as the city parking deck on 2nd Street in downtown, Greenfield Lake Park, and Legion Stadium.

Richard King, director of Wilmington's Public Services, says they have three years make improvements.

We've already been doing a lot of work, especially in our downtown area - doing a lot of curb cuts near schools, churches, and assisted living facilities. What we're working on first is a lot of the smaller items.

King says work to get Wilmington compliant with the American with Disabilities Act will cost the city approximately 3 million dollars.
