Detroit Students Get Flu Vaccine
(2009-10-28)
(Michigan Radio) - Health officials in Detroit have begun vaccinations against the H1N1 flu. And this week, they're targeting some of the most vulnerable students in the city's schools.

Darlene Allen is a school nurse and midwife at Catherine Ferguson Academy. That's a public school for pregnant students and young moms.

Allen says she expects a lot of the school's students will get the vaccine for themselves and their children.

"They have watched the news, they see that children are dying from this," said Allen. "So then they want to get the vaccine. I think we're fortunate to be one of the first schools on the list to get the vaccine."

Tomorrow, health officials will administer the vaccine to students with medical conditions. Health clinics around the city started giving the vaccine last Saturday.
