Governor hopeful about coal's future.
(2009-06-24)
>>
(wpr) - Governor Dave Freudenthal says it's ironic that the Obama administration is spending more on clean coal research than was spent by Presidents Bush or Clinton. Freudenthal says coal is coming up in a lot of discussions about the country's energy future, along with talk about cap and trade legislation and global warming. But the Governor says it's hard to say what will happen.
"What we are dealing with is a series of false starts on energy independence or energy security. And I think the real question is whether the Government will stick with it this time. And if you are gonna be energy independent, you are going to have to devote significant resources to coal."
Freudenthal says it is positive that a number of clean coal and coal gasification projects have been funded. He hopes that will help make Wyoming's coal viable in the future.
