Report: Michigan's Tourism Industry Drifting
(2008-06-02)
(Comerica Bank)
(Michigan Radio) -

Michigan's tourism industry is drifting according to a new report.

Comerica Bank's latest Michigan Tourism index shows the industry saw little growth during the first three months of 2008.

Dana Johnson is Comerica bank's chief economist. He expects high gasoline prices and Michigan's troubled economy will be a drag on the state's tourism industry this summer.

"The problem is that gasoline prices are so high, the normal driving that you have to do, to get to work, to get the kids to school, to get to the store, is taking a big chunk out of people monthly income. And so, they have to conserve somewhere else," says Johnson.

Johnson says Canadians may boost Michigan's tourism industry, drawn to the state by the weak American dollar.
