(2008-05-27)

(Michigan Radio) -

A Michigan congressman today will lay out his plan for making the U.S. more energy self sufficient.

The proposal comes as many Michiganders are still reeling from paying 4 dollars or more for a gallon of gasoline.

Brighton congressman Mike Rogers says the U.S. must put greater emphasis on nuclear power and domestic oil drilling to wean itself from foreign oil.

The Republican says the time has come to stop studying the various environmental and other issues and act.

"We need grassroots America to stand up and say 'Enough is enough.' No more investigations. No more punitive measures. No more regulation. No more raising taxes on these people. Its not working," says Rogers.

He says his 11 point plan will reduce U.S demand for foreign oil by the year 2015.

"This is an exciting time because its all right there for us to take," says Rogers.

"We just need to come together as a nation and join together, like they did 230 some years ago to say we're going to declare our independence. Well we're going to declare our energy independence."

Rogers will outline his energy plan as he tours Michigan schools with classes in solar energy and automotive technology.
