Commissioner David Sandifer died earlier this month after a long battle with cancer.
His widow Patricia says while talking with hospice workers during her husband's illness, she learned of how some Brunswick County residents lacked basic necessities like furniture or baby formula.
She thought a charitable organization designed to help those people would be exactly what her husband would've wanted.
"David loved Brunswick County and everyone in Brunswick County and we thought that that would be a good way to do things that he would like to do if he was here."
At this point, she says she doesn't know how big the charity will get.
"But hopefully, with the folks that we have that have spoken up to say they'll help us do this, some of my friends and all, I think we'll be able to make this grow and really do a good service for the county," she says.
Sandifer says she has applied for non-profit status to encourage people to donate to the organization. She says she expects to officially become a nonprofit by June.
