Slaughter Expects Presidential Signature on Bill Delaying Passport Requirement
(2007-12-19)
(WBFO) - Western New York Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says President Bush is expected to sign a bill that would delay passport requirements.

Congresswoman Slaughter says a spending bill approved Monday night by the House includes language that she helped draft. It could delay the implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative until June of 2009. That plan would require passports at border crossings, including the US Canadian borders in our region.

Slaugther say passage of the bill is a "great victory" in stopping the requirement that could devastate the local economy which benefits from cross border travel.

But the Bush administration has said it opposes any passport delay. The President must sign the spending bill. Slaughter says he has no choice.

Lawmakers want to avoid a repeat of last summer's backlog of passport applications.
