Organization Day Could Feature Property Tax Debate
(2007-09-25)
INDIANAPOLIS, IN
(wbaa) -
State legislators are likely to take action on property taxes when they meet November 20th for the ceremonial start to the new legislative session. But House Speaker Patrick Bauer doesn't expect significant changes until the session starts in earnest in January.
Governor Mitch Daniels has extended the deadline for counties to replace some of their property taxes with a new income tax, and for homeowners to file for next year's homestead tax breaks. But Daniels has said the law is murky on whether he has that authority.
Bauer says he expects the house and senate to ratify the governor's action.
Bauer says if there isn't agreement on broader measures, legislators will wait until the traditional start of the session in January to begin debate.
