Sharing the spolight with Brahms... almost. by David Srebnik John Adams is one of America's most important composers. One element that makes his music so compelling is his wish to reflect current events -- from the tragedy of 9-11 to the historic trip Richard Nixon took to China. He also writes music without a program, and credits everyone from the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Beethoven and Sibelius as influences. While it's always thrilling to hear his music performed live, the composer admits there may have been a few times when he wished he was the only composer on the program.
