NY-20: Treadwell and Gillibrand Face Off Over Debates
Democratic incumbent Kristin Gillibrand agreed on Friday to take part in three debates scheduled for October 21st, 23rd and 28th. Republican challenger Sandy Treadwell's campaign fired back, stating that Treadwell had not agreed to the debate dates or format, and that Gillibrand's unilateral decision was in "bad faith."
The Gillibrand campaign stated that she agreed at this time to the debates because the sponsors were looking for a final decision from the campaign. The campaign also said that Treadwell himself had proposed the debates in August, without consulting Gillibrand.
Other contested points in the race include Treadwell's repeated calls for Gillibrand to return campaign donations from New York Congressman Charles Rangel, who recently admitted that he failed to pay taxes on a vacation home.
Gillibrand has pointed to her high marks from good government groups for recording all meetings and earmarks requests.
No public polling numbers are currently available to show which candidate in the 20th District holds a lead. The Congressional Quarterly predicts a Democratic win in the district.
