Joyce Clifford PhD, RN, FAAN

Joyce Clifford Joyce C. Clifford PhD, RN, FAAN, served as Senior Vice President and Nurse-in-Chief at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for more than 25 years before establishing The Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership, an affiliate of The Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Clifford serves as the Executive Director of this Institute. A graduate of St. Anselm College, she received her masters in nursing from the University of Alabama and a doctorate in the field of Health Planning and Policy Analysis at the Heller School of Brandeis University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a member of multiple professional organizations, and a former President of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association from 1991 to 1994. In addition, she is a trustee for her alma mater, St. Anselm College, and was the first nurse to be a member of Harvard Medical School's Admissions Committee. Dr. Clifford also serves on the editorial advisory boards of several nursing journals.

Dr. Clifford is an established author and consultant on the subject of organizational restructuring and the development of a professional practice model. She has spoken both nationally and internationally in countries such as Norway, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Israel and The Netherlands. Her past nursing experiences include multiple nursing positions and both active and reserve duty in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps where she achieved the rank of major. She has served on the faculty of several nursing schools including the University of Alabama in Birmingham and Indiana University in Indianapolis and currently holds a Visiting Scholar appointment at Boston College School of Nursing.

Dr. Clifford has been recognized for her contributions by receiving the American Hospital Association's Award of Honor in 1990; Honorary Doctorates from St. Anselm and Simmons Colleges and Indiana University; numerous awards, including the national Sigma Theta Tau Dorothy Garrigus Founders Award for Promoting High Professional Standards, the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives Award for Excellence in Nursing Administration and, in 1996, the American Organization of Nurse Executives' Leadership Award. She was a member of the charter class of the Johnson and Johnson - Wharton Fellows Program in Management for nurses; served as a Commissioner on Secretary Otis Bowen's National Commission on Nursing in 1988; and, in 1995, was a member of the Committee on the Adequacy of Nurse Staffing of the Institute of Medicine. She has served on the Robert Wood Johnson sponsored Council on Economic Impact of Health System Change and is currently a member of the National Advisory Committee of the RWJ Executive Nurse Fellows Program.
