Detroit Schools: Show Reform, Get Stimulus Money
ANN ARBOR, MI
(Michigan Radio) -
Leaders from the Detroit Public Schools System and other urban school districts met with the Secretary of Education at the White House.
They mainly talked about the Obama Administration's economic recovery bill. Roughly $100 billion of it will go towards education. Detroit Public Schools could see up to $530 million.
Michael Casserly is executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, which Detroit is a part of. He says he knows DPS is struggling with a 150-million dollar deficit.
"But we're hopeful that these resources will help the district improve and not just bail out its budget situation."
The stimulus money will be doled out in installments. The Administration has made it clear that if schools don't show improvement after the first installment, it's likely the schools won't receive a second one. © Copyright 2010, Michigan Radio
