South Africa's Mbeki Hangs On
South Africa's ruling African National Congress has failed to reach a decision on the fate of embattled President Thabo Mbeki.
The ANC scheduled a press conference on the first day of a meeting of its top-level National Executive Committee, prompting speculation that Mbeki would be forced to quit.
But ANC General-Secretary Gwede Mantashe told reporters that there was nothing to report. He said discussions would continue later today.
Mbeki was due to stand down after ten years in office next year. But now militant Zuma supporters headed by the ANC and Communist Youth Leagues want to force him out before then, declaring him
