Former Kilpatrick Aide To Face Trial in 2009
The former top aide to then-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will go to trial early next year.
Christine Beatty is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. She refused to accept a plea deal with prosecutors this week that would have given her 60 days in jail.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny says jury selection will begin Jan. 5 for a trial expected to last weeks. Beatty is accused of lying about an affair with Kilpatrick during a civil trial last year.
Kilpatrick pleaded guilty Sept. 4. to obstruction of justice and resigned in exchange for a 120-day jail sentence. He left office Thursday, and Ken Cockrel Jr. became mayor Friday.
