Yemen Embassy Bombing Death Toll Rises
(2008-09-18)
Smoke is seen billowing outside the U.S. embassy in Sanaa
(Associated Press) -

Security officials in Yemen say one of the seven civilians wounded in yesterday's assault on the U.S. Embassy has died. That brings the death toll from yesterday's attack to 17, including six of the attackers.

The State Department is confirming that a young American woman was among the dead. Relatives say Susan Elbaneh and her Yemeni husband had been at the embassy to do paperwork for her
husband's move to the U.S. when the attackers struck.

The State Department says the assault began when militants attacked Yemeni guards at a checkpoint outside the embassy. Some wore army uniforms and were armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. Two suicide car bombs struck as the battle was being founght.

A senior Yemeni security official says 25 militants with suspected links to al-Qaida have been arrested and are being questioned by U.S. and Yemeni investigators.
