President Tries to Reassure Nation on Financial Crisis
(2008-09-18)
NYSE
(Associated Press) -
President Bush is trying to reassure the American public that his administration is working hard to calm the turmoil in the financial markets.

In brief remarks outside the Oval Office, Bush said he'd canceled his travel plans for the day to focus on the crisis. He says he shares people's worries about the situation, but added that they can be sure the government "will continue to act to strengthen and stabilize" the financial markets and improve investor confidence.

Bush did not say what additional steps might be taken, but did say the recent series of loans and takeovers will help protect the broader economy and everyday life.

The president plans to meet with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson later in the day and also will be in regular contact with other economic advisers.
