Incoming Detroit Mayor Names Deputy
Cockrel says Green will oversee the city's police department - which is still under federal oversight for problems including excessive use of force and the treatment of prisoners.
Cockrel has not announced his pick for police chief. But Green says whoever it is, he plans to let that person do their job.
"I think what the relationship should be is one where we discuss, we advise and we consult," said Green. "I hope that that person - I believe that person will understand that I come with a pretty good amount of information about policing and law enforcement, and we'll work in coordination with each other."
Green will also oversee the city's law department - which has been criticized for its handling of the civil suit that ultimately forced Mayor Kilpatrick from office. Cockrel takes the oath of office on Friday morning.
