Death in Yemen SAN'A, YEMEN (Associated Press) -

Six attackers and ten of their victims are dead after an attack on the U.S. embassy in Yemen. No Americans were hurt in what officials say was an attempt to breach the compound walls.

Multiple explosions were heard outside the facility, followed by at least 10 minutes of gunfire at the concrete checkpoints ringing the embassy. One Washington official says some of the attackers were dressed as Yemeni troops, and emergency personnel who first arrived on the scene were hit by sniper fire from gunmen stationed across the street.

The state news agency (SABA) says six attackers, six Yemeni guards and four civilians were killed. The casualties included people lined up for visas.

The compound has been targeted four times in recent years, but this was the deadliest attack. Yemen is the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden and the government has struggled to put down al-Qaida-linked militants. The State Department says today's attack bore "all the hallmarks of an al-Qaida attack."

President Bush says it's a reminder that "we are at war with extremists."
