Governor Renews Pitch For Expanding Education Options
(2008-03-04)
>
(MPRN) -

Governor Granholm addressed educators today in Lansing, and asked them to support school reforms she outlined in her State of the State address.

The governor renewed her call for raising the dropout age to 18 years old, for more money for early childhood programs, and requiring every kid to attend kindergarten.

"and this is hard for some of you, I know, but we are asking for kindergarten to be a full day experience. Full-day kindergarten, more time in seats, more ability to be prepared," says Granholm.

The governor also asked teachers, administers, and school board members to support allowing the state superintendent to close some struggling high schools.

The governor's budget proposal calls for inflationary increases in school funding, and administrators say adding programs and students will cost more money.
