Most Americans Support SCHIP Says Poll
The poll was released in the middle of a debate in Congress over the level of funding for S-CHIP, which insures low-income children who are not eligible for Medicaid.
The Senate wants to reauthorize the program with enough funding to maintain it. The House wants to expand funding to insure more low-income children. President Bush has threatened a veto, saying both bills are too expensive.
Poll director Matthew Davis says the poll should assure the House and Senate they're on the right track.
"There's gonna be some struggle about exactly how to do that, but it looks like Congress has clear ideas that match the ideas of the American people when it comes to extending and perhaps expanding the role of SCHIP in the future."
A number of states use S-CHIP to insure not just low-income children but their parents. More than half of those polled supported that kind of coverage.
