New U of M Alzheimer's Research
(2007-07-30)
(Michigan Radio) -

U of M is taking part in a nationwide study of the effects of fish oils on Alzheimer's patients.

The university's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center is one of 51 sites taking part in the National Institute on Aging study of 'omega-3 fatty acids.'

Dr. Scott Turner says previous research suggests omega-3 fatty acids' prevent the death of brain cells.

"There's also been a lot of epidemiologic studies suggesting that those who eat a lot of fish in their diet may have a decreased risk of Alzheimer's disease," says Turner.

University researchers are still recruiting patients with early stage Alzheimer's Disease for the 18 month study.
