State Resolution Calls For Automotive "Marshall Plan"
(2007-04-10)
(Michigan Radio) - The state House labor committee has given the go-ahead to a piece of legislation that calls on the U.S. Congress to create a "Marshall Plan" for the auto industry.

The plan would be modeled after the one that helped rebuild Europe after World War II

The state resolution is non-binding, and offers no specific proposals to rebuild the troubled industry.

Democrat Fred Miller of Macomb County is sponsoring the resolution.

"Look, I don't think anyone's under the impression that this resolution in and of itself is the key to Michigan's woes," Miller says. "But I think that it's an acknowledgement that we can't solve this problem ourselves. That we need help from Washington to help the U.S. automotive industry and the hundreds of thousands of jobs and families that they represent."

The House resolution comes as the state faces a nearly 700 million dollar budget deficit.

Miller says helping to resolve that problem at the state level could also have a positive impact on automakers.
