Report: Thousands of Michigan Children Live Without Health Care Coverage
A report released today says thousands of Michigan children are going without health coverage even though they don't have to.
Michigan does a pretty good job of enrolling eligible children in the Medicaid program. But the study by the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation says Michigan moving in the wrong direction. Michigan has slipped from second to fifth in a state-by-state ranking of how many children are insured.
Almost 11 percent of the people in the state - adults and children - don't have coverage. The center's Marianne Udow-Phillips says that number will improve as new federal health insurance rules take effect, but that process will take years.
"So, even before we have health reform, we need as a state to get people enrolled for the coverage that are already eligible for," Udow-Phillips also says the recession has forced more businesses to stop drop employee health benefits. © Copyright 2012, MPRN
