Abortion & Overhauling Health Care

(Michigan Radio) - A Michigan congressman may play a pivotal role in an expected House vote this week on health care.

Upper Peninsula congressman Bart Stupak is concerned about how abortion is handled in the legislation. Stupak is staunchly pro-life and he does not want a federal funds to pay for abortion services. He's also proposed an amendment to include a 'conscience clause' in the bill.

"In the past, Doctors and health care providers, if they did not want to perform an abortion, or be associated with it at their practice, their clinic, their hospital...there's a conscience clause, you did not have to do it," says Stupak, "Thatconscience clause is conspicuously left out of this legislation."

Stupak and other Pro-Life Democrats may cut the margin of victory for the health care bills very thin, if they decide to vote against it.

The House is expected to vote on health care overhaul bills this week, but the US Senate has postponed its consideration of the legislation until this fall.
