Suit Calls for Treasury Chief to Testify on AIG Bailout

(Michigan Radio) - The federal government is opposing a Michigan man's request to interview Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in a lawsuit that challenges the bailout of insurance giant AIG.

Kevin Murray of Ypsilanti is an Iraq War veteran.

He agreed to be a party to a suit claiming that the federal government's 150 billion dollar taxpayer bailout of AIG is a violation of the First Amendment.

Robert Muis is with the Thomas More Law Center, which represents Murray in the case.

Muis says some of the AIG money went to support Islamic charities. He claims some are terrorist organizations.

The Thomas More Law Center takes cases on behalf of Christian causes, but Muis says that's different.

"We defend those, those sorts of those, those long-standing religious heritage in this country," Muis explains. "We certainly don't have a longstanding heritage of providing taxpayer funding for Islamic religious activity, so I don't see there's anything inconsistent with that."

A federal judge will hear arguments on February 8th.
