Debating Detroit's Strip Club Rules
(2009-09-22)
(Michigan Radio) - Exotic dancers took center stage at Detroit's city council meeting.

The city is considering a new ordinance that will greatly restrict the city's 33 topless clubs. Some club owners say the new rules may put them out of business.

A dancer by the name of Dream' pleaded with the council to let her keep her job.

"I got a family. I got a family I got to take care of," a teary eyed Dream told the city council, "We not trying to take you guys jobs from all of you. If you all could just reconsider and think about this again...that would mean a lot to us"

The proposal is backed by a coalition of religious groups. Richard Mack spoke for the religious group.

"We don't want to see any of the good folk here in the room without employment. That's not our desire, we in fact pray for all this region," Mack said.

The ordinance is still in the drafting stage. The city council may take up the issue later this fall.

A federal court struck down Detroit's old adult business ordinance in 2007.
