Pipeline company fined for 2007 accident
The owners of an oil pipeline that broke in Mid-Michigan last month will have to pay a $2.4 million fine for a 2007 pipeline accident.
2 workers were killed in November 2007 when repairs to an Enbridge Energy pipeline in Minnesota ignited the oil.
The Transportation Department's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration blames the accident on Enbridge for failing to "adequately perform maintenance and repair activities...and hire properly trained and qualified workers."
The agency also cites similar problems at other Enbridge facilities.
The report does not address last month's pipeline rupture near Marshall, where about a million gallons of crude oil leaked, partly contaminating the Kalamazoo River. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating that accident. That investigation is expected to take 12 to 18 months. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
