Troy Tightens Distracted Driving Rules
The Troy City Council this week approved a tough new ordinance for drivers who aren't paying attention.
Lt. Michael Lyczkowski says the new law prohibits anything that would distract drivers from having complete control with at least one hand on the wheel.
He says that includes the use of hand-held wireless devices, eating, reading, grooming and writing.
It also includes pets.
"People driving with a pet in their lap, or being distracted with a pet in the rear of the vehicle, doing something that causes the driver to have to pay attention to the pet," Lyczkowski says.
The new rules take effect July 29th. The fines haven't yet been established.
