Michigan State University is getting $25 million to study the process of evolution.

University officials say the grant will also help with MSU's own evolution.

The National Science Foundation grant will help MSU researchers study biological examples and computer models of the evolutionary process. Researchers say understanding how things evolve has many practical applications, from medicine to mechanics.

MSU president Lou Anna K. Simon says having such a Science and Technology Center should attract businesses to East Lansing hoping to use the research.

"These kinds of big grants are just another affirmation of the value of Michigan State to the people of Michigan and to the world," Simon says.

The new center will draw researchers from five MSU colleges, along with four other universities across the nation.
