Panel Gives High Speed Train Proposal Lukewarm Approval
A legislative task force is giving a tentative green light to a proposal to build a privately funded high-speed train system connecting Detroit and Lansing.
The train would use Magnetic Levitation.
Magnetic Levitation, or Maglev trains ride on an electronic cushion to float along a track at high speeds. There are a few small scale Maglev trains running in Europe and Asia.
State Representative Bill Rogers (R-Brighton) headed the legislative task force that reviewed the mag-lev proposal. Rogers says the train could create jobs with cutting edge technology. But Rogers says there's just one problem, the promoter hasn't shown he's got 2 billion dollars to build the project.
"There's a lot of money that this thing will cost," says Rogers, "And I can't say we saw all the sources. And it definitely wasn't sitting in a bank account someplace."
The state must approve the train's proposed route along interstate highways.
