(Michigan Radio) - The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute made the announcement just hours before a federal task force recommended against annual mammography for most women in their 40s.

The computerized ultrasound risk evaluation system, called SoftVue, uses no radiation and clinical trials show it can accurately detect early breast cancer.

Dr. Neb Duric is one of the developers:

"It kind of works like regular ultrasound in the sense that we send soundwaves into the issue, and we look for information that comes back," Duric says. "But in our case, we also look for information that goes through the tissue, because we surround the breast with sensors, and so we're able to also measure parameters that regular ultrasound can't measure."

Duric says the screening will be much less expensive than magnetic resonance imaging - MRIs - and is painless.

The company, called Delphinus Medical Technologies, LLC, is looking for venture capital for the project.
