(MPRN) -

Michigan's gun owners may soon be able to drive through college campuses with their weapons without committing a crime.

A state House committee will vote this week on whether colleges and universities should allow for the legal transport of guns.

College campuses would still be considered no-firearm zones under the bill - meaning no one could carry a weapon while walking around.

Representative Woodrow Stanley is from Flint. He says talking about allowing guns on campuses in any capacity makes him nervous.

"I'm from a community that has too many guns already," says Stanley.

Representative Joel Sheltrown says he agrees there are too many unlicensed weapons on the streets. But he says this bill is aimed at making transportation easier for gun owners who follow Michigan's Concealed Pistol Law, or CPL.

"I believe that the amount of crimes associated with CPLs holders is less than one percent," says Shelton.

Representatives from some of Michigan's colleges and universities have asked the House committee not to pass the bill because it could increase the possibility of students being hurt.
