WSU Prof Will Run for Secretary of State
(2009-10-06)
State Capitol Building, Lansing, Michigan
(Michigan Radio) - Jocelyn Benson is a nationally recognized law expert, an attorney, and an author. Now she wants to be Michigan's next Secretary of State.

Benson is a Democrat. Republicans have held the Secretary of State office for the last 15 years.

Bill Ballenger edits the newsletter Inside Michigan Politics. He says Republicans have consistently won the office by nominating white women:

"And I think the Democrats have decided: We're going to beat the Republicans at their own game. We're going to nominate another white women, attractive, articulate, an expert in election law, impeccable credentials."

Secretary of State candidates will be chosen at state party conventions next year.

The Republican incumbent, Terri Lynn Land, cannot run again because of term limits.
