Grocery Store Will Open in Downtown Flint
(2009-10-01)
Downtown Flint, Michigan (Steve Carmody, Michigan Radio)
(Michigan Radio) - A historic building in downtown Flint will soon become a grocery store called Witherbee's Market. About 20,000 people live in the area but there are no grocery stores within a five mile radius.

The Flint Neighborhood Improvement and Preservation Project is building the market. A combination of foundations, private banks, city and state organizations are footing the bill.

Bitha Tucker, executive director of Flint Neighborhood Improvement and Preservation Project, says the market will create jobs.

"It will bring in good food for people to be able to--healthy food I should say--fresh produce, fresh dairy, meats, to help the neighborhood become more healthy."

The store will sell Michigan products and food from local farmers markets. It should open in early 2010.
