Minorities Encouraged to Enter Nursing Profession
Professor Peggy Flatt teaches nursing at Saginaw Valley.
She says racial and ethnic minority groups are underrepresented in nursing.
"We are below the expectations in terms of Asians and Pacific Isdlanders, and below the expectations that we should have in terms of Hispanic and Latino by 11 percent, and blacks and African-Americans also by 11 percent," Flatt says.
So with the help of an 855 thousand dollar federal grant, the university will provide stipends and scholarships to 45 students.
Flatt says because of the state's aging population who will need nursing care, students can expect a stable career, with good pay.
