Panel Says Hoekstra is Politicizing Guantanamo Debate
ANN ARBOR, MI
(Michigan Radio) -
Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra is being criticized by ten former senior military, intelligence and national security officials.
A letter to Hoekstra accuses the Republican of exaggerating the danger of possibly housing terror suspects at Standish Maximum Correctional Facility.
They say Hoekstra is politicizing the debate and creating unnecessary fear among residents.
Retired U.S. Army Major General Paul Eaton is one of the signees of the letter.
"Rather than offer a meaningful opportunity to solve the problem, he is going back to the Bush administration effort to use fear as a motivator to do the wrong thing," Eaton says.
A spokesman for Hoekstra says, quote, "the Congressman is not concerned the opinions of a bunch of out-of-state Democrat contributors and partisans."
