Neighborhood Grocery Trucks Deliver Fresh Produce

(Michigan Radio) -

Governor Jennifer Granholm visited Detroit today to unveil a new initiative that will bring fresh produce to city residents.

Detroit has been called a food desert for years. Grocery stores are few and far between and most of the corner stores are stocked with junk food and pop.

But the Michigan Neighborhood Food Movers program hopes to change that. Fresh fruits and vegetables are loaded up on trucks, and then the trucks drive around various neighborhoods, much like ice cream trucks.

Gov. Granholm hopes that, like produce, the pilot program will grow.

"If this works, we expect that it will, we expect it'll be a great example that we can take all over the state," says Granholm. "But it's all starting right here for this community."

Trucks will roam three different Detroit neighborhoods and serve more than 130,000 Detroit residents. The program is financed with loans.
