More Teacher Layoffs in Grand Rapids
(2009-07-07)
(Michigan Radio) -

More layoff notices are on the way for teachers in Grand Rapids. A total of 155 teachers in the district will get the notices. And district leaders say they're still not sure what the final number of layoffs will be.

The Grand Rapids Public Schools district issued teacher layoff notices less than a month ago. Now more layoff notices are going out. That's after the state Senate approved a school aid budget that cuts funding for schools by more than 100 dollars per student.

But the numbers could get even worse as the budget works its way through the state house and the governor's office.

John Helmholdt is spokesman for GRPS. He says the district has to finish its budget in July, but the state's budget isn't due until October.

"A lot of our budgeting is a guessing game," says Helmholdt, "It is our best guess, best assumptions, which we know right now is a moving target based on the state's revenue projections."

And those revenue projections have continued to fall throughout the year.
