Obama Near Decision on Afghanistan Strategy

(Associated Press) - The White House is aiming for an announcement on Afghanistan by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Spokesman Robert Gibbs says President Barack Obama "has the information he wants and needs to make a decision" on committing new U.S. troops to that war.

Gibbs called last night's gathering with top foreign policy and military advisers "a rigorous final meeting." It was the 10th Afghanistan strategy review session since mid-September.

Military officials and others expect Obama to go with a plan involving up to 35,000 U.S. forces.

They say they expect Obama to deliver a national address laying out the new strategy. Congressional hearings would follow immediately, and would include testimony from the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

The White House is bracing for a tough sell to the public, to foreign allies and to lawmakers who would approve the spending.
